Empowering Veterans with New Missions in Construction
About Heroes in Hard Hats
At GSE, we are proud to launch "Heroes in Hard Hats," a dedicated program aimed at hiring U.S. military veterans to join our construction team. Our mission is to honor the skills and discipline veterans bring, providing them with meaningful employment opportunities. Veterans possess unique attributes that align perfectly with our company values, such as leadership, teamwork, and a commitment to excellence. By integrating these heroes into our workforce, we aim to foster a more diverse and resilient team, capable of achieving great things together.
Why Veterans Make Great Team Members
Veterans bring a wealth of experience and skills that make them invaluable team members. Here’s why veterans are a perfect fit for our company, summarized with the acronym LEADER:
Leadership: Veterans have honed their leadership skills in high-pressure situations, making them excellent leaders on and off the construction site.
Ethics: The rigorous training and structured environment of the military instill a strong sense of ethics, ensuring tasks are completed with integrity and accountability.
Adaptability: Veterans are trained to adapt to ever-changing situations, making them flexible and capable of handling unexpected challenges.
Discipline: The discipline ingrained during their military service ensures that veterans approach tasks with dedication and precision.
Expertise: With specialized training and diverse experiences, veterans bring a high level of expertise to their roles.
Resilience: Veterans have faced and overcome significant challenges, making them resilient and able to thrive in demanding environments.
By hiring veterans, we gain team members who exemplify LEADER qualities, contributing to the success and strength of our company.
Testimonials
Michael Castellino - Project Engineer
Since coming out of the military and pursuing a degree, I wanted to find a company that aligned with the core values installed in me as a United States Marine. GSE is committed to “Doing it Safe, and Doing it Right”, similar concepts my NCO’s instilled in me and those I passed on to my junior Marines. Employees of GSE understand the reputation this company has built across the country over the last 40 years and work hard to maintain that. This has developed into long-term employees who, through small unit leadership, have built hard-working efficient crews with a sense of mission accomplishment. Being able to work alongside individuals who care as much about the success of those to the left and right of them is not something you find everywhere outside of the military, but not something I have had to question about those whom I have worked with at GSE. I believe that any veteran would find an easy transition into a company full of professionals like GSE Construction.
Leo Wescott - Superintendent
My name is Leo Wescott, and I am a Superintendent for GSE Construction. Currently I am stationed at Phantom Ranch, which is literally at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I have been working here at Phantom Ranch since my hiring in November of 2021, and I love it here. Specific to this project; we work 8 days on and 6 days off, which has been nice for family time. We travel from the South Rim of the park to Phantom by helicopter, which is neat in itself.
I have just over 40 years of experience in the construction industry, with 20+ of them as a traveling Superintendent. I have had the pleasure of working in multiple disciplines with multiple owner types, all over the country. A large portion of my experience has been in the Federal arena, which comes in handy here.
GSE is the is the only company I’ve worked for that supports you 100% and then allows you to do your thing. If you have self-motivation and the desire to build great things, this is an excellent place to work. I fully anticipate working here until I retire.
